Market News40-year celebration wall official launch

This Thursday, 16 December, the MMA will be hosting an event to officially launch our 40-year celebration wall. Now that COVID restrictions have eased, it is a great opportunity to celebrate those who have reached this significant milestone over the past year and to catch up with the Market community. MMA CEO, Mark Maskiell and Chairperson, Peter Tuohey will be in attendance to present some of the recent recipients with their 40-year service certificate.

We hope to see you there!
When: Thursday, 16 December 7am
Where: 40-year celebration wall, next to store 51 on the Buyers’ Walk

Tell us what you think in the market survey

Every year the MMA distribute the market satisfaction survey to get feedback and insights on how we’re going, what’s working, what can be improved and how we can assist your business.

The data collected is used to improve the operations, facilities and opportunities for businesses at the Melbourne Market.

Click here to complete the survey. The first 75 market users to complete the survey will receive a $15 voucher to use at participating market cafes! Complete Survey

Advisory committees
Last week we held our final advisory committee meetings for 2021. The advisory committees covered a range of topics, including;

– Safety issues and initiatives
– Project updates, such as the solar canopy construction and warehousing on the eastern boundary
– Marketing initiatives, such as A better choice! and a market open day
– Customer Portal roll out
– Market Culture

The recent meetings were our last advisory committee meetings for the current three-year term. We would like to extend our thanks to the current committee members for their contributions over the last three years.

Keep an eye out next year, when we will be calling for nominations from interested individuals to hold the position for a period of three years commencing 1 March 2022 for the following committees:
– Fruit & Vegetable Wholesalers Committee
– Fruit & Vegetable Growers Committee
– Fruit & Vegetable Retailers Committee
– Flower Industry Committee

Past and current advisory committee members are eligible to reapply. We will share more information on this in the new year.

2022 Golf Day

After missing out in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic, the Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day will be back bigger and better than ever in 2022! Whilst the event itself didn’t go ahead earlier this year due to COVID, an impressive $28,847 was still raised!

The first Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day was held in 2013, and since that time, fundraising through the event has raised an incredible $544,000 for DEBRA Australia.

DEBRA Australia is a charity that supports individuals, families and carers affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), which is a rare disease whereby the skin blisters and peels at the slightest touch. Living with EB has been likened to living with third-degree burns. It is very painful, and sufferers must be bandaged every day with dressings to protect and medicate their wounds.
The Melbourne Market Lions Club, with support from major sponsors Fresh State, the Melbourne Market Authority and Toyota Material Handling, is proud to be supporting DEBRA Australia again in 2022 for the 10th consecutive year.

A better choice! – Australian Mushroom Growers Association collaboration

A better choice! has partnered with the Australian Mushrooms Growers Association (AMGA) to promote their summer campaign ‘Mushrooms + Mince = The Blend’ – which launched December 1.

This summer campaign promotes a simple cooking technique, to encourage all Australians to cook healthier, more plant-forward meals at home – using a combination of mushrooms and minced meat. By simply replacing a portion of mince with finely diced mushrooms, family favourite recipes like spaghetti, tacos, meatballs and burgers are instantly boosted with nutrition and are lower in fat and sodium. Mushrooms also have a unique advantage due to their umami flavour (which is the same flavour of meat); by adding mushrooms to minced meat dishes, the ‘meaty’ flavour is enhanced – this is a benefit no other vegetable can claim.

We are looking for 30 A better choice!
stores to participate in this campaign, which allows your customers the chance to win one of four Weber Family Qs! Participating A better choice! stores will be merchandised with point of sale material including posters, tear-off pads and wobblers. Delayed gratification: a slow start hasn’t dampened Australia’s cherry season cheer

For many in Australia, a surefire way to tell the festive season has started is by the arrival of cherry season. Depending on the region, cherry harvests normally run from mid-November to as late as the end of February; this year, however, thanks to a record-breakingly wet and cold November, the season has been delayed.
