Market News
Vaccination hub is open and operating
The Melbourne Market Vaccination Hub is officially up and running, with 285 vaccinations administered yesterday on our opening day.

Previously we had advertised that the Vaccination Hub would be open each day this week from 5 am to 12 pm.
This time has now been amended, and the clinic will be open from 6 am to 12 pm each morning until Friday 15th October.

Whilst priority has always been to administer second doses at the Melbourne Market Vaccination Hub this week, with sufficient medical staff available, Austin Health can expand to provide first vaccine doses for anyone still needing to get vaccinated.

The process will work the same as the first hub, with a walk-up service and no bookings required. You will need to bring your medicare card (if you have one) and a form of photo ID with you again.

The Vaccination Hub will be set up in office spaces of tenancies 77 and 79 on level 1 of the Buyers’ Walk. A map showing the location and flow of foot traffic is included below.

Let’s all make sure we work together to protect our market community and the supply chain – get vaccinated this week at the Melbourne Market!

Mandatory Vaccination
As communicated to the market community last week, which you can read here, upon the release of the Acting Chief Health Officer’s COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Directions (No. 6) it was confirmed that the responsibility to ensure authorised workers are vaccinated falls on employers. The MMA had been preparing to manage site entry based on vaccination status, however the new directions give the responsibility to collect, record, and hold vaccination information about workers to employers, not site operators.

All market users are still required to have their first COVID-19 vaccine dose by Friday, 15 October 2021 and fully vaccinated by 26 November 2021.

Market users will not have to provide the MMA with their vaccination records and the MMA will not be checking vaccination status on entry as previously suggested.

We still want to make sure people are doing the right thing, so to assist businesses with complying with their obligations, the MMA can disconnect access cards of unvaccinated workers at the written direction of the businesses.

In preparation for mandatory vaccination rules coming into effect, temperature screening has ceased at Gate 1 entry and huts have been removed from the entry lanes.

If you have any questions, please send them through to submissions@melbournemarket.com.au for the MMA to address in future communications.

Moon Bean Relocation
Moon Bean café is relocating to a temporary new home from next Monday 18 October.

A food truck will be parked on the Buyers’ Walk in front of the location that will soon become Moon Bean’s permanent home. The pop-up café will serve Moon Bean’s same great coffee, along with a scaled down food menu for a few weeks before moving into their brand-new premises.

Joel and the team at Moon Bean are using the relocation as an opportunity to diversify some of their offerings, and they will begin selling wholesale fresh bakery lines. The new café location will have access from both the Buyers’ Walk and the trading floor, offering seating for up to 40 patrons. Several forklift parking bays will also be added to the north courtyard close by the new café location, providing continued easy access for forklift drivers.

LPG fob replacement
The MMA is upgrading the LPG North Station point of sale system. Upgrade works will happen on 14 October and 18 October. As part of the upgrade, the old fobs will need to be replaced.

Amanda Flannery will be on hand to distribute the new fobs on the below dates;
12 October 5am – 8am
13 October 5am – 8am
19 October 5am – 8am

Please collect new fobs from Amanda who will be located at EFS1, highlighted below.

Fobs will not be distributed to anyone other than Business Owner/Director or Nominee. Proof of identity (either access card or drivers licence) must be provided and signing of a Collection Acknowledgement form will be required. Information on the timeline of installation will be provided at collection.

If you have any questions please send them through to submissions@melbournemarket.com.au.

Engage and retain quality team members
Complacency in employees can cost a business thousands, with consultancy company Gallup reporting disengagement at work can lead to 37% higher absenteeism, 18% lower productivity and 15% lower profitability.

Workplace training is a great way to engage staff and holds as many benefits for employers as it does for employees. Training allows employees to further develop their skills, feel valued by their employer and boost job satisfaction. All of which results in a more engaged employee. This is consistent amongst many fields, so in your planning, ensure retaining good staff is a top priority.

The Government is currently assisting you to train your staff by paying up to 50% of their wage (up to $28,000 over a 12-month period). So to avoid burn-out, upskill your staff to reduce your load and enrol them in the Certificate III in Greengrocery.

The Certificate which runs for nine months part time, covers a range of units including stock control, merchandising and safe food handling. It’s aimed to be an entry point into the retail greengrocery industry and allows students to receive valuable experience that could lead to potential management positions or business ownership.

Celebrating Peri-Operative Nurses Week

Last week the MMA, on behalf of the industry, donated boxes of apples, bananas and oranges to the Peri-Op team of the Northern Hospital.

For obvious reasons with the demands on the health service, the Peri-Op team, which includes approximately 250 staff, have been flat out with moving resources across the health service to cater for the demand of COVID.

This was a small way our community could thank the amazing work of our nurses as they celebrated a very special week.

Fire drill – 14 October

Please be advised there will be a fire drill taking place on Thursday 14 October between 2pm – 2:05pm for Wiley employees and contractors only.

An air horn will sound in both the North and South courtyards for the drill.

This time has been chosen to have minimal impact on market operations. If you or your employees/colleagues will be onsite during this time, please inform them of this drill.
