In this week’s Market News: – Coming Together for Flood-affected Growers this Christmas – Market Advisory Committee Meetings – Market Operations Market News Coming together for flood-affected growers this Christmas With the Melbourne Market Cherry Auction being postponed until 2023, the MMA, Fresh State and A better choice! will still come together to support and raise money for flood-affected growers this festive season. The MMA, Fresh State and A better choice! are kicking off the fundraiser with a combined $30,000 donation to the growers who are fundamental to our fresh produce supply chain. The recent floods saw numerous rural towns and communities in Victoria’s north and northeast completely inundated, with more than 120,000 hectares of crops being lost and approximately 12,000 farming properties damaged in the devastating floods. There are several ways you can get involved and donate, firstly through a dedicated fundraiser page on Givit (coming soon…) and secondly on Thursday, 22 December, from 4am when Santa himself visits the Market shaking donation tins. Market Advisory Committee Meetings The Market advisory committees will hold meetings today and tomorrow. You can ask your advisory committee members to raise questions or ideas with the MMA. Advisory committees work with the Melbourne Market Authority to advise on matters relating to Market operations and the fresh produce industry. Committee members are a great source of information and advice for Market users. To find out who the members of the advisory committees are, please visit the MMA website. Christmas Trading Hours The Melbourne Market, including the Flower Market, will be closed on public holidays during the Christmas – New Year period. To accommodate buying demand, buyers will have access to the Melbourne Market on Monday, 26 and Tuesday, 27 December, to collect pre-arranged produce orders only. It is important to remember the Buyers’ Walk, Trading Floor, and Flower Market will be closed, as these are not mandatory trading days. Some wholesalers and warehouse tenants may allow access to their premises for buyers who have made individual arrangements to collect produce. “The final day for Market donations to food charity FareShare in 2022 will be Tuesday, 20 December.
