Guess who’s turning three?

It might seem like only yesterday we were trading at West Melbourne, but this week we celebrate our third anniversary of the opening of the Market at Epping.
Keep an eye out on this Thursday, 30 August, during trade, for your birthday cupcake to celebrate the milestone.

The Fresh Five

This week we talk to Brenton Huyskens.
1. Your role at the Melbourne Market: I’ve worked at Cranbourne Valley Produce for four years now, we sell bunch lines, things like baby beets and herbs. Currently I’m running the stand because the old man is away, but normally I drive the forklift.
2. If you could only take three fruits or vegetables with you to a desert island, which would you take: Potatoes, because you can make beer out of them. I’d also take dill and celeriac.
3. When was the last time you bought flowers for someone: I bought flowers for Jess, who works at JJ Fresh, for her birthday.
4. Tell us something that is on your ‘bucket list’: I want to buy a condo in Thailand.
5. What do you most enjoy about working at the Melbourne Market:  I love being able to learn things from the guys who have been here in the Market for a long time. I try and suck as much information out of the old guys as I can. I’ve picked up a lot from my Dad and people like Phil Riseley, who have been in the Market their whole lives.

Worksafe visits

Worksafe Victoria have notified the MMA that they will be conducting ad-hoc site visits at the Melbourne Market starting late September through to November. During this period Worksafe will be onsite approximately two mornings per week. It’s important to remember that Worksafe inspectors have the authority to enter any workplace at any time (you might remember this advertising campaign that was run a few years ago). Should an inspector ask to speak with you or ask to enter your worksite (e.g. cool room, store, warehouse) you are obligated to follow their instructions. Their visit is part of Worksafe’s Transport, Postal and Warehousing Industry project which will focus on manual loading and unloading of goods in the industry. Over the coming weeks we will provide a series of information about how to stay safe whilst carrying out these manual handling tasks.
And remember, the reason we all need to be safe at work is not about ticking a box with Worksafe or even about work at all; it’s because everyone deserves to go home safely at the end of each day.

ACCC issues first financial penalty under 2017 Horticulture Code

A Sydney fruit and vegetable wholesaler is the first business to pay a $10,500 infringement notice for an alleged breach of the Horticulture Code, which was updated in 2017 to include penalties for non-compliance. Trump’s battle a win for Australian exporters

The prospect of a US-China trade war could open opportunities for Australian fresh produce suppliers. Sam Lawrence, from Produce Plus, discusses how the trade spat between the two countries could be advantageous for Australian produce exporters as the Chinese market may look to Australia as a more reliable trade partner for the produce historically imported from the US.
