Meet our new Safety Committee
Our new safety committee met for the first time last Tuesday, 16 November. The committee has been established to ensure constant improvement of safety operations around the market, with a strong focus on ensuring the health and safety of market users is at the forefront of everything we do at the Melbourne Market.

Committee members include:

Amanda Flannery – MMA (Chair)
David Whitchelo – MMA
Lauren Kitchener – MMA
Jason Cooper – Fresh State
Mark Robinson – Robinson’s Fresh Solutions
Peter Tran – Produce of Virginia
Paul Smith – Dykes Bros Brad White – Toyota Material Handling
Ray N De Rosario – Toyota Material Handling

The main points that came out of the inaugural meeting were:

Lighting in car parks
Driver behaviour
Speed zones and signage

Over the coming months, the safety committee will be working together to address these issues and other concerns raised in the meeting. Minutes from the meeting will be uploaded to the MMA website this week.

If you are interested in joining the safety committee please reach out to Amanda
Email: aflannery@melbournemarket.com.au Phone: 0428 910 182

Alternatively, if you have any safety concerns you would like addressed in the next meeting, which will take place in February 2022, please reach out to any of the committee members.

Access Card vaccination status

The MMA has received feedback that numerous transport drivers are unable to attend the pop-up stand outside Customer Service between 4am-8am to update their access cards.

If Market Users are unable to attend during Customer Service hours they can have their vaccination proof verified at Gate 1 for processing by the Customer Service team. The new overlay with the vaccination symbol will be available for collection at Gate 1 after 48 hours.

Vaccination reminder
As Authorised Workers, all Melbourne Market access cardholders and contractors must be double vaccinated by 26 November. Any person who has currently only had a single vaccination dose should ensure they receive their second dose before 26 November for continued access to the site.

Pop-up stand
The last day of the pop up stand outside customer service will be Wednesday, 24 November 4am-8am.

Upcoming advisory committee meeting
The next advisory meetings are scheduled for December 7th and 8th.
Speaking to your advisory committee members is an effective way you can raise key issues with the MMA.
To find out who your advisory committee members are, click here, and talk to them about the Market issues that affect you before the meetings in the next couple of weeks.

COVID Rules Update
Face masks
Whilst face masks are still required to be worn indoors in high-risk and retail settings, as a wholesale market coupled with the vaccine mandate for authorised workers (including all workers and visitors to the Melbourne Market) we are able to ease face mask restrictions at the Melbourne Market.
Face masks will no longer be mandatory in either indoor or outdoor locations. Individuals can choose to wear face masks if they wish.

Density Limits
There are no density limits or requirements on indoor or outdoor locations, so any existing limits on the number of people in market cafes, workspaces, warehouses, office meeting rooms, or other market locations can be removed.

Positive Cases
The Department of Health will no longer conduct contact tracing, and exposure sites will not be publicly listed, but as part of these changes, it was also announced that positive cases must inform their workplace if they test positive for COVID.

At the Melbourne Market, we have already been following this process since the start of the pandemic, with the market community promptly notified of positive cases and exposure locations through central communications. This process will remain unchanged, with businesses still required to inform the MMA if an employee tests positive, but the key difference is that close contacts will only need to isolate until a negative test is returned.

Notice of sprinkler system testing
For those in the Market between 9.30am – 4pm, Tuesday 23 November, we will be conducting one of our twice-yearly sprinkler system tests. The test will engage the alarm gong bells at each sprinkler installation bank in the Market common areas. These bells will be in alarm when the specific bank is being tested and may disrupt tenants within the Buyers Walk Offices and Warehouse 5 & 6 Offices.

Testing and noise in each area should be for approximately 30 minutes per sprinkler installation bank (unless issues are found) between 9.30am – 4pm.

We apologise for any inconvenience as we conduct this essential safety testing.

Men’s Health Awareness Month
November is a time of year to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and men’s suicide; made more prevalent in the last decade with the Movember movement.  Your risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, but that doesn’t mean it’s a disease that only affects old men. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Men who are of African or Caribbean descent, and men who have a family history (a brother or father with prostate cancer), are 2.5x more likely to get prostate cancer. If you’re 50, you should be talking to your doctor about PSA testing. If you’re of African or Caribbean descent, you need to start that conversation at 45. And if you have a brother or father with prostate cancer in their history, do it at 45.

Below Dave shares his story of prostate cancer and how his diagnosis has motivated all of his friends to actively get tested.
