Traffic Barriers to Improve Safety

To improve vehicle safety the MMA have engaged Impact Traffic Engineering to assist with designing a safer traffic management plan within the market.

From Monday, May 23 traffic barriers will be in place on the East Side of the crossover exits between the Buyer’s Walk and undercover carpark canopies. This initiative is to prevent forklifts from cutting through parking bays by forcing them to turn left or right and to stick to the designated forklift highways. These two locations have seen several incidents and near misses recently.

The barriers will begin as a trial for three months and MRO’s will be stationed at both points with traffic wands to assist drivers in adjusting to the new directional change.

We encourage Business Principals to brief all staff, especially forklift drivers on the change to ensure everyone is aware of the traffic barrier trial.

Please see the images and video below for further clarification.

THINK SAFETY
STAY OFF YOUR PHONE WHILE OPERATING A VEHICLE

Distractions are dangerous. Use of a mobile or similar handheld device while operating a forklift or other Market-specific vehicle is prohibited, this includes scrolling though social media and sending SMS’s, not just voice calls.

Safety System Testing
Annual testing of critical safety systems is being be carried out over the coming weeks.
Testing will occur during times where there are minimal people onsite to reduce disruption; however, some tenants on the Buyers’ Walk and in warehouses may be effected for a brief period.

Saturday, May 21 – 9:30am to 4pm
Fire alarm/Sprinkler system testing
Buyers’ Walk, Trading Floor and Warehouse 5 and 6.
Testing and noise will last for approximately 30 minutes per sprinkler installation bank (unless issues are found).

Thursday, May 26 – 12pm to 3pm.
Fire Indicator Panels and Emergency Warning Intercommunication System
Administration Building, Buyers Walk, Flower Market and Warehouses 5 and 6
Emergency warning tones will be played through speakers in each zoned area. Buyers’ Walk testing to be completed after 2pm to minimise disruption to level 1 offices.
