A WorkSafe Victoria requirement:
Eliminating the risk of ejection from Market Vehicles

Vehicles are essential to work at the Melbourne Market but can also be a significant safety risk.

WorkSafe Victoria has contacted the MMA about electric vehicle safety and, more specifically, preventing people from being ejected from market-approved vehicles.

WorkSafe recommends the most effective way for businesses to eliminate the risk of ejection from market-approved vehicles is by fitting seatbelts for all occupants in all-electric vehicles, including forklifts, golf buggies, and Taylor Dunns, many of which do not currently have seatbelts.

Reasonable timeframes will be put in place for the installation of seat belts before infringements are issued, as WorkSafe expects seatbelts to be fitted and worn when operating all vehicles in the market.

Temporary Power Shutdown
On Sunday, 28 August, various areas of the Melbourne Market will undergo a temporary power shutdown that will affect some premises. The shutdown allows crucial maintenance works to be carried out on the inner ring power supply system.

The power supply will be cut for approximately eight and a half hours, from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

The following Market areas will be affected:

– F&V Building
– Trading Stand
– NFC
– Admin Building
– Diesel Station LPG Station – North & South
– Waste Transfer Station
– Loading West/ North/ South
– General House Services – Lighting and Power

During the shutdown, premises will be without power supply, including cooling/refrigeration.
Warehouses on the outer ring will not be affected by this shutdown.

Vale Cresenzo ‘Peter’ Savoia

The MMA and Market community offer condolences to the family of Cresenzo ‘Peter’ Savoia, a valued employee of Latorre’s Fruit & Vegetable Wholesalers and a veteran of the Melbourne Market, with almost 50 years in the industry.

Rest in Peace, Peter.

Bardee Food Waste Management Solution

The MMA continues to source innovative solutions to improve organic waste solutions in the market while ensuring costs do not affect businesses.

Bardee is a fast-growing company helping to make agriculture more sustainable, by diverting food waste from landfill and using it to create fertilisers. And it makes a real difference because every tonne of food waste diverted from landfill creates 1,900kg of CO2 offsets!

Bardee is now partnering with the Melbourne Market, collecting organic waste and turning it into protein products that can then be used as fertilisers, which are then available for purchase by Melbourne Market growers at a discounted price.

To learn more about how you can purchase Bardee fertilisers and complete the sustainability circle please contact Hannah Johnston.
