World Environment Day

Monday 5 June was World Environment Day, which focuses on eliminating waste and creating a sustainable future for all, both of which are extremely important to the Melbourne Market and our community. Through world-class facilities and environmentally friendly initiatives, the Melbourne Market is a leader in sustainability.

The Market hosts the largest rooftop solar panel system in Greater North-Eastern Victoria. The 2.4mega-watt system offsets 1,772,838kg of carbon emissions, the equivalent of planting 34,381 trees every year.

Last financial year approximately 10 million litres of potable water was saved and 98% of waste was recycled thanks to the generosity of market users and their commitment to recycling.

Our partnerships with Foodbank and Fareshare not only contribute to reducing food waste but help support Victorians doing it tough.

A key priority for the future will be to explore clean electrolysis-derived Hydrogen energy to further offset carbon emissions at the Market.

World Environment Day reminds us there are things each and every one of us can do to reduce our carbon footprint. Want to know the 10 actions to start with? Check out these recommendations from the United Nations on how you can make a difference: https://www.un.org/en/actnow/ten-actions

Market Advisory Committee Meetings

The Market Advisory Committees will be meeting on Tuesday, 13 June and Wednesday, 14 June. You can ask your advisory committee members to raise questions or ideas with the MMA.

Advisory committees work with the Melbourne Market Authority to advise on matters relating to Market operations and the fresh produce industry. Committee members are a great source of information and advice for Market users. To find out who the members of the advisory committees are, please visit the MMA website.
