Racism has no home at the Melbourne Market

Nobody deserves to come to work in an environment where they are subject to racism. As a community, we all expect each other to act reasonably and responsibly, treating others with the same respect we would give our family and friends. Racial name-calling, favouritism or exclusion based on race or ethnicity, or stereotypical comments and jokes are all acts of racism, and they are unacceptable.

We all want a Melbourne Market we are proud of, an environment where we would be proud for our sons, daughters, partners, and parents to be involved.
When at work, ask yourself, would my family be proud to see me now?

Have you been the victim of racism in the market?
If you would like to seek support, confidentially discuss or report an issue relating to racism, sexism, violence, bullying or harassment in the Melbourne Market, please email strongertogether@melbournemarket.com.au or call 0448 413 098.

Please read the Stronger Together website for further information and support.

Men’s Health Month – Parenting and Mental Health

Parenting young children presents many challenges, particularly the effects it can have on mental health. For fathers working in the fresh produce industry, this can be compounded by the long, often overnight hours and stress of the job.

Family Man, by Movember, provides simple yet effective tools for mastering the art of parenting. The initiative aims to equip dads with the right tools to help them live healthier and happier lives, especially in tough times. You can read more about Family Man, including useful parenting tools for dads, by clicking here and making sure to check out the interactive video series below.

Updated Site Induction Module

A reminder that as part of the Melbourne Market’s ‘Stronger Together’ initiative, the Melbourne Market’s induction has been updated with a new module, Market Conduct.

All new market users are now undertaking this updated induction, and we are about to begin a program where all current market users will re-do the induction in line with the rollout of digital access cards.

In the meantime, we are encouraging all existing Market users to watch the module that discusses important topics, including the Market’s drug and alcohol policy and respectful behaviour within the Market.

Christmas Trading Hours

The Melbourne Market, including the Flower Market, will be closed on public holidays during the Christmas – New Year period.

To accommodate buying demand during the busy festive season, buyers will be able to access the site to collect orders that have been pre-arranged. It is important to remember the Buyers’ Walk, Trading Floor, and Flower Market will be closed, as these are not mandatory trading days. Some wholesalers, growers and warehouse tenants may allow access to their premises for buyers who have made individual arrangements to collect produce.

Upcoming Advisory Committee Meetings

The four Market Advisory Committees are scheduled to meet on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th of November. In the lead-up to these meetings, you can ask your advisory committee members to raise questions or ideas with the MMA.

Advisory committees work with the Melbourne Market Authority to advise on Market operations and the fresh produce industry matters. Committee members are a great source of information and advice for Market users. To find out who the members of the advisory committees are, please visit the MMA website.
