Flower Market update – Thursday 6 August 2020 Under stage 4 restrictions as they currently stand, the Wholesale Flower Market is unable to operate. At approximately 8:00 pm last night the MMA released a statement confirming that trade would no longer be able to be permitted at the Melbourne Flower Market on Thursday 6 August. The MMA held off making this announcement earlier in the day as we were waiting on advice from government as to whether the stage 4 restrictions would be amended to allow the Melbourne Flower Market to trade. In the absence of this advice, we had no choice but to shut the Melbourne Flower Market. After our 8:00 pm statement, rumours began circulating that the Flower Market would be open for trade on Thursday. At no point did the MMA or its management, sanction trade at the Flower Market for Thursday. We did, however, respond to several enquiries and advised that stand holders could enter the market to deal with, and collect, existing stock from their cool rooms. Flower Market operations moving forward In the absence of any amendments to Stage 4 restrictions, the Melbourne Flower Market remains closed. The MMA is suspending flower buyer and flower seller access cards as of midnight tonight to ensure compliance to stage 4 restrictions. Those watching Premier Daniel Andrews’ press conference today may have heard him specifically mention cut flowers and wholesale flower market as an industry the government are still trying to clarify as to what extent it can operate through stage 4 restrictions. The MMA remains committed to advocating on behalf of the industry and will continue to work with government to enable trade at the Melbourne Wholesale Flower Market to recommence as soon as possible. The MMA will provide any relevant updates as they become available. |
