Coronavirus (COVID-19) update – Friday 12 February

In the last hour, Premier Daniel Andrews announced that all of Victoria will go into a 5-day stage-4 lockdown from 11.59 pm tonight.
Under the rules of this lockdown the Melbourne Market, including the Flower Market, will remain open; we are essential in Victoria’s food supply chain.

Changes to operations at the Melbourne Market

At the Melbourne Market, we had already implemented indoor face mask rules and social distancing guidelines; and as announced yesterday temperature screening is being re-introduced upon entry from Sunday (click here to read yesterday’s COVID update in full).

In addition to these existing and planned measures, the following restrictions will come into effect from 11.59 pm tonight:
– Face masks must be worn at all times, both in indoor and outdoor
settings
– Market access will be limited to essential personnel only; this means
market tours will be put on hold and visitors will be unable to enter the
market
– Market cafes will return to take away service only
– The one person per electric vehicle/buggy rule will be re-introduced
– Next Tuesday’s planned Lunar New Year event will be postponed until a
later date

Exposure sites

If you have attended one of the known COVID exposure sites, as listed on the DHHS website, including terminal 4 at Melbourne Airport, you must follow DHHS guidelines as they relate to isolation and testing. You must not attend the Melbourne Market until given clearance by the DHHS.

Social distancing essential

Social distancing must continue to be strictly adhered to, but there are other things you can do to limit your contact with others.
– Where possible preorder produce via phone or online and have it delivered to your parking bay
– If you don’t need to be in a particular area for work purposes, don’t hang around, particularly with others
– Ensure you are washing and sanitising your hands regularly during your time at the market

Let’s work together and do the right thing

On a positive note, the market community has been here before, and we know what to do.

During 2020 our facility was heralded as an operation of best practice. Despite having a few isolated positive cases enter the market, we managed to avoid widespread outbreaks and kept businesses running without disruption.

Our success as a community was due to people working together and doing the right thing, and it’s essential we adopt this attitude again. It’s up to all of us to ensure COVID rules are being followed, so if you see someone disregarding rules, call them out. And if you are a leader of our community, like a senior manager or business principal, you have a responsibility to ensure your staff comply with COVID rules.

As confirmed by the Chief Health Officer, this outbreak is the highly contagious UK variant strain. For the sake of everyone’s health, businesses and livelihoods, let’s work together, follow the rules and make sure we keep the Melbourne Market safe, open and operational.
