Coronavirus (COVID-19) update – Tuesday 21 July 2020
Melbourne Market Business Continuity Plan
From the outset of this pandemic, the MMA developed a business continuity plan which we are always reviewing and adjusting in line with the latest information and expert advice. Our business continuity plan is a structured strategy with different levels which outlines what operational functions need to change to ensure the Melbourne Market can continue to operate safely.  As various factors change, such as the increase of Government restrictions, the behaviours of Market users, or an increase in COVID cases in the Market itself, we look at advancing to the next level of the plan.

A key factor on whether we will advance to the next level in our business continuity plan is how Market users comply with the behaviours that help stop the spread of the virus; these are:
– Social distancing, keeping a distance of 1.5 metres between yourself and others wherever possible
– Wearing a face mask at all times
– Practising good hygiene by regularly washing and sanitising your hands

Should we advance to the next stages of our business continuity plan, the way businesses operate at the Market would change considerably.
Some of the changes you would see implemented include:
– Restricting the number of people allowed on each trading stand (for both fruit & veg and flowers)
– Limiting the number of people permitted on the Buyers’ Walk at any one time
– Restricting buyers to only receiving deliveries to their parking bays

These scenarios are not ideal to effectively run a business, but if required, they will be implemented to ensure the Melbourne Market can continue to operate.

There are other things you can do to limit your contact with others and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. While the MMA does not currently mandate these, they are additional things you can do to play your part:
– Where possible preorder produce via phone or online and have it delivered to your parking bay
– If you don’t need to be in a particular area for work purposes, don’t hang around, particularly with others

We all have a part to play to ensure the Melbourne Market remains operational, and we must work together to do everything we can to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
