Coronavirus (COVID-19) update – Thursday 30 July 2020 Positive COVID-19 case in the Melbourne Wholesale Market A few hours ago, the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) was informed that an individual who worked at the Melbourne Market this week tested positive to COVID-19. The infected individual is Paul Cristiano, who works for a Market wholesaler. We wish Paul a speedy recovery. It is our understanding that Paul had spent the majority of his time at the Market in a warehouse office, and has worn a face mask for the past two weeks. The MMA has temporarily suspended the access cards of a handful of known contacts until negative test results are confirmed. If you believe that you have been a close contact of Paul’s, the MMA advise that you self isolate, and get tested if you develop symptoms. A close contact is defined as spending over 15 minutes with an infected individual in an enclosed space. The MMA is currently looking at CCTV footage for the preceding ten days to review Paul’s movements. The MMA spoke to representatives from the DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services) earlier tonight, and they advised that they are aware of the positive case and the surrounding circumstances. The DHHS advised that the MMA does not need to take any further action at this point. Paul’s employer has been proactive in their approach to this pandemic and has required staff to wear PPE before the mandatory rules were in place. They have been regularly undertaking deep cleans of their premises’ over the past months as a precaution, and are organising for IKON to undertake additional deep cleaning this evening. Given these proactive measures, along with the face mask and social distancing rules now in place, the risk of person-to-person transmission in the Market is reduced. This virus does not discriminate, and people can be infectious without displaying any symptoms. The key things you must remember: – If you are tested for COVID-19, you must not come to the Market to work, or to purchase fresh produce or flowers until a negative test result is confirmed. – If you or someone in your business tests positive to COVID, or is deemed a close contact by the DHHS, you must inform the MMA immediately – Keep a distance of 1.5 metres between yourself and others wherever possible – Wear a face mask at all times – Practise good hygiene by regularly washing and sanitising your hands We all have a part to play to ensure the Melbourne Market remains operational, and we must work together to do everything we can to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
