Statement
12 November 2015
Early this morning a forklift at the Melbourne Market caught fire causing the fuel tank to erupt, we are pleased to advise that no one was injured in this incident.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MBF) was on the scene in just over 5 minutes. They immediately secured the area and extinguished the fire.
The Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) and WorkSafe have conducted an initial investigation to confirm the cause. It is understood to be an isolated incident and no other forklifts are at risk.
We can confirm that all safety procedures were followed.
All forklifts are required to adhere to registration requirements, including safety checks, to operate at the Market.
We commend the quick response from Market staff, bystanders and the MFB.
