Market News

Market safety seatbelt blitz

Last week there was an incident where a person was ejected from the forklift they were driving because they were not wearing a seatbelt. Thankfully, they were not too badly hurt. However, it could have been much worse, and the incident could have been avoided if they had worn their seatbelt.

In the past twelve months, there have been several incidents that resulted in serious injury due to market users not wearing seatbelts. To keep us all safe, the operations team and MROs will focus on seatbelt compliance in the coming weeks.

Forklift and electric vehicle (buggy) drivers not wearing seatbelts will receive a verbal warning in the first instance. Repeat offenders will be issued an infringement and lose demerit points.

Please help keep yourself, your colleagues and your employees safe by wearing your seatbelt in both forklifts, electric vehicles and buggies, and encourage others to do the same.

Pest control update

Thank you to the many market users who have been packing away fresh produce and flowers outside of trading hours so that pests are not tempted. Everyone’s effort helps ensure our pest control measures are effective, resulting in a safer, cleaner and more hygienic market.

MROs will continue to monitor the Buyers Walk, Trading Floor and NFC after hours. If you have questions, please talk to Syed, Izzy or Amy onsite.

Due to a security upgrade, Melbourne Market’s free WiFi will be down this Friday, 31 May, from 12 noon to 5 pm. Market users can still hotspot their phones to access the internet if required. Tenant-owned networks will not be affected.

Market Closure: King’s Birthday Public Holiday Monday 10 June

Please note that the Market will be closed on Monday 10 June for the King’s Birthday Public Holiday.

If your parking permit only allows access on a Monday, and you would like to come to the market on an alternative adjacent day, you will not be charged for parking and can enter the market.

However, please keep in mind that your regular parking bay may not be available. Please see an Market Relations Officer on arrival for instruction.

Sponsored social content goes viral – in a good way!

The Victorian a better choice! team enlisted social media personality Liz Douglas, aka Glow Diaries, to create a video inspiring people to shop at their local greengrocer.

Liz filmed visiting her local, Sculli Bros in Greensborough, for inspiration and ingredients. She then created a curried cauliflower salad recipe and posted it on her InstagramTikTok, and the a better choice! website.

Together, the videos received more than 80,000+ views, with Liz encouraging people to shop at their local greengrocer because it’s a better choice!

It’s National Reconciliation Week

What is reconciliation?
At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians.

The 2024 National Reconciliation Week theme, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder that this work should continue.

Why these dates?
The day before Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations.

How can I get involved?
National Reconciliation Week is a great time to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognise the importance of building respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples. Hort Innovation harnesses AI to improve weather forecasting

Growers could soon have personalised local weather forecasts directly at their fingertips through a programme that leverages the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning combined with traditional weather forecasting techniques.

Aimed at significantly enhancing the precision, quality and usability of weather-related information, the A$1.3m initiative, delivered through Hort Innovation and led by Jane’s Weather, is tailored to meet the specific needs of individual growers, considering their farming block, unique terrain and operational requirements.
