Bullying & Harassment have no home at the Melbourne Market

Nobody deserves to come to work in an environment where they are subject to bullying or harassment. As a community, we all expect each other to act reasonably and responsibly, treating others with the same respect we would give our family and friends.
Name-calling, swearing, abusive language, intentionally excluding, intimidation and threats are all acts of bullying and harassment.

We all want a Melbourne Market we are proud of, an environment where we would be proud for our sons, daughters, partners, and parents to be involved.
When at work, ask yourself, would my family be proud to see me now?

Have you been the victim of bullying or harassment in the market?
If you would like to seek support, confidentially discuss or report an issue relating to racism, sexism, violence, bullying or harassment in the Melbourne Market, please email strongertogether@melbournemarket.com.au or call 0448 413 098.

Men’s Health Month – Removing the stigma around men’s mental health

Did you know, men will die on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesn’t have to be that way: we can all take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives.

During November, we’ll be shining a light on men’s health issues.

Men are just as likely as anyone to struggle with their mental health but less likely to get the help they need.

Talking about mental health can feel intimidating at first – for you and your friend or partner. But there are some things you can do to help the conversation go smoothly and put your mate at ease.

  1. Normalise their experience by sharing yours
  2. Get informed about mental health
  3. Reach out to your friend for help
  4. Encourage your friend to think of mental health just like anything else that needs fixing

Christmas Trading Hours

The Melbourne Market, including the Flower Market, will be closed on public holidays during the Christmas – New Year period.
To accommodate buying demand, buyers will have access to the Melbourne Market on Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Tuesday 26th December, to collect pre-arranged produce orders only.

It is important to remember the Buyers’ Walk, Trading Floor, and Flower Market will be closed, as these are not mandatory trading days. Some wholesalers, growers and warehouse tenants may allow access to their premises for buyers who have made individual arrangements to collect produce.

Upcoming Advisory Committee Meetings

The four Market Advisory Committees are scheduled to meet on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th of November. In the lead-up to these meetings, you can ask your advisory committee members to raise questions or ideas with the MMA.

Advisory committees work with the Melbourne Market Authority to advise on Market operations and the fresh produce industry matters. Committee members are a great source of information and advice for Market users. To find out who the members of the advisory committees are, please visit the MMA website.

Happy Diwali!

Often referred to as the festival of lights, Diwali is a five-day celebration that represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and wisdom over ignorance. Diwali is celebrated around the world by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Sindhis, and others who just enjoy the spirit of the honored tradition. Those who celebrate the holiday light lamps called diyas, enjoy traditional Diwali sweets, and exchange happy Diwali wishes and greetings with loved ones.
While the five-day festival began on Friday, November 10, celebrations peaked on Sunday, coinciding with the end of the year’s darkest day.

There are still Diwali celebrations happening around Melbourne over the coming weeks for those who would like to take part:

  • Diwali at Dandenong Market: Dandenong, November 19 (11am to 3pm)
  • Diwali Delights: Festival of Lights Celebrations!: Kensington, November 25 (2pm to 6pm)
  • Multicultural Festival Connecting Communities Together: Sunbury, November 25 (1pm to 6.30pm)
  • Festival of Lights – Melbourne Diwali Fireworks 2023: Footscray, November 25 (4pm to 9pm)

Wishing our Melbourne Market community a joyful Diwali!

This Friday, 17 November, is White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Australia is a global social movement working to stop men’s violence against women. White Ribbon Day aims to call on all men to make women’s safety a men’s issue. To challenge the status quo, learn more or make a commitment to creating change.Becoming an ally to women starts with knowing what to do when something doesn’t seem right.
