Tracking our safety performance
The MMA has introduced a new initiative to highlight the number of market OHS incidents in each given week.

Market TV screens now display the total number of OHS related incidents from the previous week to keep safety top of mind and give the market community a safety goal to work towards.

Incidents included in the weekly tally include speeding, dangerous driving, failure to obey road signage, using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle, failure to wear a face mask when required, and other similar offences.

Between the 2nd and 8th of August, a total of 123 OHS related incidents were recorded.

We all deserve to work in a safe environment and go home to our families and loved ones at the end of each workday. Let’s all switch onto safety, do the right thing and target zero OHS incidents!

Temporary Power Shutdown

On Sunday 22 August various areas of the Melbourne Market will undergo a temporary power shutdown. The shutdown is to allow for crucial maintenance works to be carried out on the inner ring power supply system.
Power supply will be cut for approximately eight and a half hours, from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

The following market areas will be affected:
– Buyers’ Walk (all tenancies)
– Administration Building
– All commercial businesses
– Fruit & Vegetable Trading Floor
– Flower Market (including Flower Market Café and APACK).
– Diesel station
– LPG stations
– Recycling Transfer Centre
– Loading West and recess loading dock
– EFS buildings
– Central Cooling Plant

Warehouses on the outer ring will not be affected by this shutdown.

To minimise any impact on your business, we suggest the following: To maintain cool temperatures within your tenancy, we would recommend not entering your premise during the shutdown; this means you should reschedule deliveries where possible. If you have temperature-sensitive produce, you may need to consider alternative storage options. If you have deliveries coming to the site during this time, you will need to alert your driver to the power outage and have them follow the instruction of Market Relations Officers on site. All electronic equipment such as computers, laptops and point of sale systems should be switched off, and all data should be saved and backed up before the outage. There will be restricted access to internal buildings within the Market due to low light, and most restrooms on-site will be closed. Warehouse 5 & 6 toilets will have power and will be available for use. If you have any questions, please contact the help desk on 9258 6419.

40-year celebration wall
The Melbourne Market is not just a place to come to work, we are a community, and to many, the market is like an extended family.

The MMA recognise market participants who have worked in the industry for 40 years or more. When you become a 40-year member, you receive a gold access card, which has no fee applied, as well as a commemorative framed certificate.

Now the MMA further recognises the life-long contribution of our gold cardholders with the installation of a 40-year wall.

The wall is filled with the names of all those who have hit the 40-year milestone in a bold display of colours, next to store 51 on the Buyers’ Walk. It has been designed so names can be added each year as market users reach the significant milestone.
Names that appear on the wall are based on our records; however, there may be market users who have worked in the industry for over 40 years but have never applied for the gold card.

To become a gold card member you need to apply by downloading and completing the 40-year service award form from the website.
If you think your name should be added to the wall, we invite you to apply for a gold card.

The Melbourne Market is made up of a diverse, hard working and proud group of individuals, that make the market the unique and special place it is.

The MMA is delighted to honour the longest-serving members of our community with the 40-year celebration wall.

New mural celebrating fresh produce journey

If you pass by the rear of the administration building, you will notice the once drab grey wall is being transformed into a work of art.

A mural is being painted to cover the entire wall to add a splash of colour to the market surroundings. The mural has been designed to capture the journey of produce and flowers from paddock to the consumer and is painted by Justine McAllister.

Customer portal trial already providing valuable insights

As reported a few weeks ago, the trial of the new ‘My MMA Portal’ is underway, with 14 market businesses currently using the system.

Those using the portal have provided some key insights and valuable feedback to the MMA to improve the system before it is rolled out market-wide.

Since the trial began, the MMA has already:
– Improved the visibility of online statements
– Linked a Glycol usage portal for each relevant business

Some businesses taking part in the trial have already used the portal to ensure business details are correct. For example, they have updated employee contact details and deleted unused access cards with just the click of a button.

We have received some other great suggestions from those taking part in the trial. We will continue to look at the ongoing improvement of the portal, adding new features to improve efficiency for market users over the life of the system.

If you are interested in joining the trial and providing the MMA with valuable feedback, please email aflannery@melbournemarket.com.au

For something a bit light-hearted and to pencil in the diary for when lockdown is over, check out the trailer to the new foreign film, The Rose Maker

When times get tough, a passionate rose-grower used to living in isolation is forced to hire workers who know nothing about gardening in the comedic French drama.
