Meet your advisory committee members

Over the coming weeks, we will be profiling each of our flower advisory committee members for you to get to know a little more about them.
This week we spoke to Greg Duffy.
Your role at the Market:
I own Mayblooms Pty Ltd, coming up to my 20th year in business.
What are you most passionate about in relation to the fresh flower industry?
Providing good quality flowers and looking after the customers.
What are you most positive about for the future in the flower industry?
Even though we may have lost some foot traffic at Epping, it’s great to have Jan coming through with the tours, bringing in future florists.
What do you think are the most important issues for the flower market?
The facility here at the Market is fabulous but the location doesn’t suit everyone. We need to look at ways to encourage more visitation to the Flower Market.
Why did you want to become a member of the advisory committee?
I was approached when we were still at West Melbourne. I think it’s important to everybody in the Flower Market that there’s a link between the MMA and standholders.
What is something most people wouldn’t know about you?
I’m a passionate Hawks supporter and I go to as many games as I  can!

Last month the Flower Advisory Committee met with the MMA for the regular quarterly meeting.
Advisory committees work with the MMA to advise on matters relating to Market operations and the fresh flower and produce industries.
During the meetings, the MMA provides updates on significant issues and projects, as well as allowing the committee members to voice any concerns or suggestions to help the Market run smoother.

Passing of much-loved flower grower

The MMA and wider Flower Market community were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Mr Frank Baguley.
Frank was a well-liked and hard-working flower grower.
We offer our condolences to the Baguley family.

Melbourne Market Drug and Alcohol Policy

The MMA is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all Market users.
The MMA reminds the Market community that all persons entering the Melbourne Market site must at all times be fit for duty.
This means, any person on Market Land must not have a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) over 0.00%, or be under the influence of prohibited drugs.
The MMA reserves the right to conduct drug and alcohol testing on site to ensure the safety of all Market users.

Florists call for ACCC investigation into ‘misleading’ advertisements by national firms

Florists say customers are being misled into not supporting local businesses by deceptive online advertising — and it’s putting their businesses at risk. A group of florists has called on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to investigate the practice that allows national florists to masquerade as local companies.

High Voltage Power Shutdown

On Sunday 28 July and Sunday 4 August, the Melbourne Market will undergo a shutdown of power to various areas of the Market.
The reason for the shutdown is twofold;

1. The local electricity infrastructure provider, AUSNET are shutting off power to not only the Melbourne Market but the entire local area to upgrade power lines to the Northern Hospital.
2. The MMA is using the imposed shutdown as an opportunity to complete annual mandatory high voltage safety testing.

Power supply into the Market runs on two separate electrical feeder lines, so different areas of the Market will be affected on each weekend.

What to do in the event of an emergency 

Save the date, on Tuesday 30 July an emergency response training session will be held, focusing on what to do in the event of an emergency here at the Market. All Market users are welcome to attend the session; because safety is everyone’s responsibility, but ideally at least one representative from each tenancy should attend.

Time: 6.00am – 7.30am
Where: Conference Room, Ground Floor, Market Administration Building

In addition to this training session, the ‘Emergency Procedures Guidebook for Tenants‘ has been updated to now include the new diesel station facilities.
All Market businesses and users should have access to and understand the contents of this guidebook. The updated  ‘Emergency Procedures Guidebook for Tenants‘ can be downloaded from the MMA website.
