New pallet drop-off stations available in the Market

An additional 12 pallet drop-off stations were introduced around the Market last week to make disposing of plain pallets quick, easy and free.

In total there are now 14 pallet drop-off stations available after two were first introduced in December last year.

Market users should utilise these stations when they do not have access to a forklift. Those market users who have access to a forklift should continue to discard their pallets directly at the Recycling Transfer Centre free of charge.

If the pallet drop-off stations are full, either take the pallets to another drop-off station or to the Recycling Transfer Centre. Any pallets left anywhere on Market land other than these locations will be considered dumping and infringements will apply.

Electric vehicle safety check

ElectroCarts has provided a check list of maintenance guidelines to ensure your electric vehicle is safe to use.

The electric vehicle fire in the Market on 1 March was due to insufficient maintenance of a battery, battery terminals and/or battery compartment, so it’s a timely reminder to check your vehicle is healthy and safe.

Country of origin labelling forums

The Australian Government, in partnership with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, will be conducting information sessions to educate businesses on the country of origin labelling requirements for food.

Businesses will be required to make changes to the country of origin labels on unpackaged fresh fruit and vegetables before 1 July 2018.

There are four forums scheduled in Victoria during March:

• Albury                             Thursday 23 March (am)
• Shepparton                     Thursday 23 March (pm)
• Melbourne (Dandenong)   Tuesday 28 March (am)
• Melbourne (CBD)              Tuesday 28 March (pm)

These forums are designed to help businesses understand the new labels, including the requirements that need to be met to make ‘grown in/product of/made in’ claims. The forums will also include a demonstration of the online tool which can be used to help identify appropriate labels for food products.

Fruit and vegetable sellers and buyers are encouraged to attend.

Forklift refresher training course dates

Forklift refresher training provided on site at the Melbourne Market will assist safety conscious organisations to keep their workers’ skills up to date and current.

The training will provide workers with information about current WorkSafe regulations and/or legislation and standard operating procedures as well as site safety and safe driving principles.

Training will be delivered at the Melbourne Market in 3 hour blocks over a 2-day period for a total of 6 hours.

Training Dates:
21 and 22 March, 2017
11 and 12  April, 2017
16 and 17 May, 2017
20 and 21 June, 2017

Time: 8.00am to 11.00am
Cost: $324.50 (includes GST)

At the end of the course participants will receive a certificate of participation.
