Market News

The Melbourne Market Authority would like to thank the entire market community for working together and doing the right thing throughout a challenging 2020.
We wish you and your families a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

This will be the last edition of This Week in the Market for 2020.
Look out for your weekly updates to resume in mid-January 2021.

If you have any queries or require updates during the Christmas New Year period, call the MMA office on 9258 6100.

NSW COVID-19 outbreak – impacts on market operations
The Victorian Government has announced further restrictions in response to the Greater Sydney COVID outbreak.

In relation to our work at the market, the following applies:

Commercial Freight
Where a commercial freight operator (truck driver) entering the Melbourne Market has resided in, visited, been in, or travelled through a red zone or a hot zone since 11 December 2020;

– The individual must only leave the vehicle cabin to access toilet and bathroom facilities, to sign in to the site at Gate 1, or in an emergency situation.
– Where the individual leaves the vehicle cabin, they must wear a fitted face mask at all times.

At the Melbourne Market, we have all worked so hard to keep the market community safe and businesses operating through this pandemic. Transport across borders into the Market site poses a considerable risk to the safety of the market community. If you are working or interacting with truck drivers that you know have resided in, visited, been in, or travelled through a red zone or a hot zone, we ask you play your part and insist they wear a face mask and remain in the vehicle cabin while at the Melbourne Market.

Anyone who has been in a red zone, a hot zone or other NSW exposure sites on or since Friday 11 December 2020 and is already in Victoria, even if you are showing no symptoms, should get tested and quarantine for 14 days from the date they left the hot zone. You must not visit the Melbourne Market.

Importance of Social Distancing
Now more than ever, the importance of adhering to social distancing rules is essential. You must remain at least 1.5 metres from other Market users wherever possible, and you should continue to carry a face mask with you at all times, and you put it on when you are not able to maintain social distancing.
We thank those in the market community who continue to do the right thing.

Detailed information regarding COVID operational changes at the Market can be found at www.melbournemarket.com.au/melbourne-market-coronavirus-covid-19-response/.

Tenancy 105 – Expression of Interest

Moon Bean Cafe has been exploring alternate locations within the market to relocate their cafe. Should Moon Bean Cafe move to a new location within the market, tenancy 105 would become available on the highly sought-after Buyers’ Walk.

In this scenario, the Melbourne Market has a vision for Tenancy 105 to be converted and to operate as a wholesale fruit and vegetable trading store and is now inviting expressions of interest in the space.
You can download an information pack and complete your online expression of interest form now on the Melbourne Market website.

Visit to The Green Apple

Recently a small group from the market were welcomed to “The Green Apple” by Market Buyer David Dawood, where we toured the store and enjoyed breakfast at the family restaurant, Al Tanoor.
MMA Chief Operating Officer, David Whitchelo, chatted to David to hear about the family business and the store’s beginnings, view the video below.

The MMA team are looking forward to more opportunities to visit our market users and their businesses in 2021. New online form to apply for a trading stand
A new online form has been developed to easily allow market tenants to express interest in new or additional Fruit and Vegetable Stand Licences at the Melbourne Market.
As market users would know, most fruit and vegetable stands are currently occupied; however, they do become available over time.
Whilst submitting the online expression of interest will not automatically sign you up to a stand licence, it will allow the Property Team to contact you when a potential stand allocation becomes available.

Visit melbournemarkets.com.au/fruit-vegetable-stand-licence-application/ to complete your expression of interest.

Tell us what you think

There are still incentives available for people who complete the 2020 market satisfaction survey.
The first 75 people to complete the survey will receive a $15 voucher to use at participating market cafes!

The survey for the fruit and vegetable market is still live, and you can access it by clicking here.

Every year the MMA distribute the market satisfaction survey to get feedback and insights on how we’re going, what’s working, what can be improved and how we can assist your business.

The data collected is used to improve the operations, facilities and opportunities for businesses at the Melbourne Market. Complete the survey now

Tourism Australia campaign pitches horticulture and hospitality work to Kiwis

A new advertising campaign to lure New Zealanders to Australia to help pick fruit and vegetables is the latest attempt to try to offset a potential labour shortage crisis for Australian farmers.

The campaign – which is also aimed at hospitality workers – uses slogans like “enjoy the fruits of your labour”, “‘pick your way to paradise by working on an Aussie fruit farm” and “work your way to paradise with a job in Aussie hospitality”.
